Futa Secondary School, Pejeh Chiefdom

Futa village is the main administration centre for Pejeh Chiefdom, being centrally located and the home of the Paramount Chief. Although there are village primary schools in the chiefdom (WTN has supported the rebuilding of two schools, to date), there is no permanent secondary school. A dilapidated building is currently being used in Futa as a secondary school, but this is far too small to cater for the number of children and very poorly resourced. The nearest permanent secondary schools are in the towns of Pujehun or Bo, which are both at least ninety minutes drive away on very poor roads – so many secondary school students drop out of education altogether, adversely effecting their future.

We have secured the funding to build a new secondary school in Futa. This will be located on a spacious level site just outside of the village, with room to construct the new school building, an ecosan toilet and washing unit, and a well and hand-pump. There will also be space for a sports and recreation field. The school building will be modelled on the design we have used previously at Gbongay and Koiva schools, but with larger classrooms, space for storage, and an office for the teachers.

Construction has started, with the foundations of the school under way and the borehole for the well being drilled. When the school is completed, this will greatly improve the educational prospects for the youth of the chiefdom and help to secure a more sustainable future for the whole community.
