Sri Lanka, Housing Projects

House Reconstruction

We are building in groups of thirty, well designed permanent dwellings which consider the environment and local community needs and customs. We will use as many local materials as possible and incorporate 'good practice' ideas such as rainwater harvesting and ecological sewerage. The houses will be of brick construction and are durable, airy and measure approximately 500 square feet . They can be erected simply and easily and cost approximately £3000 per unit. Interior design is flexible depending on each family’s individual requirements.

The main aim will be to provide better quality and more appropriate housing than existed previously.

Home Contents Packs

Families lost everything as the wave swept through their homes. Often one sees homes which have side walls but no front and back walls. The Tsunami simply went straight through the house taking all the contents with it.

The ‘starter packs' will include mosquito nets, rice cooking pots, plates, utensils etc, as well as vital furniture such as beds, chairs, etc. These are the fundamentals to help people rebuild their lives. The price is £200 per pack.

The Future

We are already considering many new ideas for supporting Sri Lanka but it is essential that we first ascertain whether it will be effective, corruption-free and long-term in its benefits to the people.
